Top 10 Unmissable Wineries in Mendoza, Argentina.

Mendoza in Argentina is world famous for its prolific wine production, especially Malbec. With over 100 wineries in Mendoza to visit we had some tough decisions to make. Dutifully we did our research and over the course of a week managed to fit in some of the best in the region.

1. Lagarde.

The wine pairing lunch here is superb. Knowledgeable sommeliers keep the vino flowing which makes for a very leisurely lunch.

Kicking off the Degustation, Lagarde Winery Mendoza

We opted for the five course degustation which was as visually impressive as it was delicious. Stand out wine for us was the Henry reserve Malbec.

2. Mendel.

A small old winery set back amongst the vines, Mendel has been making quality wines forever. We booked a private tasting and had our guide Ms. Silvina all to ourself. She was more than generous with both her time and pours.

The Malbec 2014 was the notable wine for us, but to be fair they were all delicious. Our only wish is that we could have carried more bottles home.

3. Tempus Alba.

Immaculately maintained grounds with an architecturally impressive bodega. We visited as part of a bike tour of the Maipu region and tried their generous tasting menu. The chilled rose was a great way to kick off the day (11am).

Malbec, Tempus Alba Winery

We spent a good hour going through the Malbec reserve, Cabernet Sauvignon and Tempranillo, all of which were great. Unbeatable views across the valley from their roof terrace make this a must do in the region.
Address: Moreno 572, M5504BPS Maipú, Mendoza

4. Trapiche.

Beautiful old brick building and interesting tour explaining the history of the area. Wines sadly weren’t our favourite, however this was the last winery of the day which may have meant slight taste bud fatigue.

5. Carmelo Patti.

One of the most respected wineries in Mendoza, winemaker Carmello has won countless awards for his famous wines. We met his daughter who guided us through some of their aged grand reserves.

Their wines have a depth to them that only come from years of careful cultivation. Many critics rave about this place. If you’re looking for some of the highest regarded wine in the world be sure you add this to your list.

6. Luigi Bosco.

If you manage to arrange a tour, Luigi Bosco is well worth a visit. It’s not the cheapest tasting (approx $30 USD) but their line of DOC approved wines are incredible.

Bodega Luigi Bosca’s Cellar

We tried the deep violet Malbec which had spent most of it’s life in french oak giving it a rich and complex full bodied finish.

7. Norton.

One of the oldest wineries in Mendoza belonging to the famous Swarovski family. They have a massive cellar filled with thousands of bottles of fantastic vintage wine.

The grapes here are DOC approved. This means vines are 80+ years old and they must use traditional cultivation techniques.

Niento Senetiner – some of the best Malbec in the region is to be found right here.

This gives the wine an aged note, coveted by many oenologists. The Malbec is one of the best we’ve tasted and worth this trip alone. Beautiful grounds and knowledgeable staff add to the reasons to put this on your list.
Address: Guardia Vieja 2000, 5509 Luján de Cuyo, Mendoza

10. Vina el Cerno.

Cozy and Rustic – inside the Vina Cerro Bodega.

This winery felt a bit disorganised with the staff seemingly a little unprepared for the days visitors. However once we got under way we found the wines to be good and worth the wait.

The building is a little tumbledown and rough around the edges, but we think that just adds to the rustic experience.

Pro Tips for visiting Wineries in Mendoza:

1. Most of the wineries are open from 10am-5pm with a 2hr siesta for lunch. Check first.

2. Make reservations before you go. Lots of these wineries are appointment only, don’t get caught out.

3. If you’re trying to fit in a few in one day, consider skipping the tours and heading straight to the tastings. TBH once you’ve seen one malolactic fermentation tank, you’ve seen them all..

4. Can drinking all this wine be too much of a good thing? If your livers feeling the burn, take a well deserved detox day at the thermal spring baths in nearby Cacheuta. Busses run from the main terminal and it makes for a great day off the sauce. Try to avoid weekends when it’s more likely to be crowded with families and kids.
